Nikolay Gavazov lives in Plovdiv, Bulgaria where he and his wife raised two daughters. He has a PhD in Agriculture and extensive experience in Business Management.
Prior to joining One Heart Bulgaria in 2003, Dr. Gavazov volunteered for over ten years in various humanitarian projects in Bulgaria. His humanitarian efforts there include: delivering baby food, bedding, and detergents to the Sv. Mina #1 clinic in Plovdiv for babies with brain malfunctions; supplying food to the Batkun Mental Hospital in Pazardjik; supplying computers for the School of Deaf Children in Plovdiv, the Mental Hospital of Plovdiv, and for the Social Aid Department of Plovdiv; providing materials to the School of Disabled Children in Plovdiv; and finally, providing a medical gas supply system to the Plovdiv Regional Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases.
With his extensive humanitarian experience and excellent reputation with orphanages, hospitals, and the Bulgarian government, Dr. Gavazov is well qualified to serve as One Heart's Field Director in Bulgaria. As Field Director, Dr. Gavazov routinely visits the orphanages we assist and holds meetings with the orphanage directors to assess the needs of the children and orphanage facility, setting up sponsorships where necessary. He also facilitates the delivery of diapers, medicines, hygiene items, bedding, food, medical equipment etc.
Dr. Gavazov enjoys interacting directly with the children who have come to adore him and helps them with special projects for their orphanage. In addition, Dr. Gavazov supervises a staff of three to four Bulgarian representatives working in three orphanages in Sofia. Of particular importance is the constant and consistent communication that Dr. Gavazov must have with One Heart Children's Foundation in America as he reports on the above-mentioned responsibilities as well as the Bulgarian laws and regulations.
Of his involvement with humanitarian work, Dr. Gavazov states: “Humanitarian works stands as a major value in my view of life. Making happy someone who is needy and distressed is the only way of making yourself truly happy and satisfied as well.”
